As I said, food is my passion. Being a food blogger is my dream and the only thing I am worried about is that I don’t want to gain weight from the food I consumed, though it is unrealistic unless I keep working out which I will try my best to do.
When I am building my personal brand on Instagram as a food diary blog, I was struggling with the quality of posts that is how to produce feeds that are eye-catching as other bloggers. I know a lot of people, not only restaurant owners, but also ordinary people like me, want to share with others a delicious meal they have on social media, but find their photos may not that intriguing or eye-pleasing, right? For me, honestly, sometimes food looks gross in my pictures.
But don’t worry! I did some research and here is what I found and I am pulling them together as a “How To Get A Good Shot of Food” instruction.
Focus on the Food
This may sound weird. But trust me, there are still people out there shooting without focusing on food. Let’s say, if you are in Milk Bar, New York City, enjoying Christina Tosi’s signature Birthday Cake, you can take out your phone and easily let it autofocus on the layers of the cake instead of the plates.

Compose the Photo
Knowing Instagram photo post sizes is important because you could skip the annoying cropping process if you are sure your photos will fit.
Instagram users could only upload photos in a 1:1 aspect ratio (the width-to-height ratio of a photo) when it first launched in 2012, but luckily, it updated that policy in 2015 so that users could share horizontal and vertical images. Thus, the ideal image sizes for Instagram are
· 1:1 aspect ratio for square photos
· 4:5 aspect ratio for portrait photos
· 1.91:1 aspect ratio for landscape photos
This is the data I pulled from tailwind blog and if you have more time to learn about the size, go ahead and check it out!
One practical suggestion I offer is that utilizing the “square” function in your camera if you are an iPhone user! And switch on the “gridlines” feature to balance your shot and make sure your subject is in the frame. Always remember the “rules of thirds”.

Try a Different Angle
I’ll start with a common angle that is 45-degrees. It is popular and you could place your camera anywhere at 45 degrees in relation to your subject. One easy different angle could be an overhead shot. Don’t be ashamed and just stand up to take an overhead shot of your food! But experts suggest that don’t do this all the time because it will get boring very fast. Or if you are having Milk Bar’s signature Cereal Milk Ice Cream, you could ask someone to hold that and take a shot, which is usually what food bloggers do nowadays on Instagram. From my personal view, I could feel the happiness behind the camera, and I feel more involved and I want to have that food as well.

Use a Postproduction App
It is common to photoshop your photos because shooting doesn’t work perfectly all the time! In summer, the ice cream could melt too fast and you don’t have time to capture it as you want. (which could be a seducing image in some way). Besides, you want to keep your posts in the same style, so you could add the same filter, or adjust some colors in some subtle ways.
